From reef days and Maya sites to the right stay, wedding or transfer, plan your Belize journey with a Belizean travel specialist based in Chicago.

A small country with an extraordinary range.

At 8,867 square miles, Belize brings reef, rainforest, rivers, caves, islands and Maya history into one remarkable destination.

Belize is rich in culture, with Creole, Garifuna, Mestizo, Maya, East Indian and Mennonite communities. Offshore, colorful coral gardens, many species of fish, more than 200 islands and the world’s second-longest barrier reef create exceptional opportunities for fishing, snorkeling and diving.

Inland, ancient Maya sites, caves, winding rivers, waterfalls and lush forest invite travelers to explore history, zipline through the jungle and tube through cave systems. Or simply slow down, feel the warm breeze and enjoy the bright Caribbean sun.

Twenty years of Belize tourism experience.

I’m Roberto Garcia, a Belizean travel specialist born and raised in Calcutta village, Corozal District. Now based in Chicago after moving there around 2021, I bring 20 years of work in Belize’s tourism industry—in Ambergris Caye, Placencia, Caye Caulker and around the country’s three atolls.

My experience includes service-focused leadership roles at resorts and aboard dive cruises. After exploring Belize from north to south, I’m proud to share the country I know and help travelers shape a vacation that feels personal.

Tall Maya temple rising above the rainforest at Tikal National Park
Tikal’s great temples emerge above the Guatemalan rainforest.

Travel from the San Ignacio area to Tikal National Park in Guatemala, 75 miles west and about 2 hours 30 minutes by road. Tikal began around 600 B.C.; in the Late Classic period, its architecture rivaled world capitals and its population reached 100,000. The 222-square-mile park has had no human settlement for the past 1,000 years and is home to 300 bird species, five feline species, three primate species, deer, anteaters and snakes. Five steep-sided limestone temples rise more than 200 feet above the forest floor; only two are open for climbing. About 3,000 structures have been identified and 20 percent excavated. San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

  • Beachfront resort
  • Overwater cabana
  • Family house on the dock
  • Garden cabana under the palms

Belize’s best-known island lies south of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, with mangroves, exotic birds, energetic nightlife and the Western Hemisphere’s longest barrier reef. San Pedro is its largest settlement and only town, and Ambergris Caye is often called “La Isla Bonita” after Madonna’s 1987 song mentioning San Pedro. Golf carts are the main powered transportation. The island is about 15 minutes by air from mainland Belize, with hourly flights from Philip Goldson International Airport and Belize City Municipal Airstrip on Maya Island Air and Tropic Air; water taxis also travel from Belize City. Accommodation ranges from full-service island hotels to luxury resorts for couples, families and friends.

The Caye Caulker Marine Reserve offers barrier-reef dive sites, while the Split is a popular place to swim, snorkel, relax and visit beach bars. Domestic flights connect the international airport with Caye Caulker and provide service from San Pedro, Corozal and Belize City Municipal Airstrip; water taxis operate from Belize City’s Marine Terminal. Stay options include polished island hotels and luxury beachfront properties.

Placencia Peninsula

This charming, low-key fishing village in southeastern Belize and its palm-lined peninsula are a gateway to the southern reef, with snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing and sailing. Placencia Lagoon, between the peninsula and mainland, is home to manatees and saltwater crocodiles; to the north, the Garifuna community of Seine Bight is known for traditional drumming and dance. Lodging includes distinctive resorts, luxury villas and private beach homes.

Hopkins

The friendliest village in Belize

On the Caribbean coast of the Stann Creek District, about half an hour south of Dangriga and just north of Placencia, Hopkins is a small Garifuna fishing village that still moves at village pace — bicycles on sandy lanes, drums in the evening, and miles of quiet beach. It sits between two worlds: the reef and southern cayes offshore, and the jungle at its back, with the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary (the world's first jaguar preserve) and the waterfalls of Mayflower Bocawina National Park close by. Stays here are small and personal: beachfront boutique resorts, cabanas right on the sand, guesthouses and vacation homes along the village, and eco-lodges at the jungle's edge — no big-resort crowds. Days fill easily: snorkeling, diving and fishing on the southern reef, island trips to the cayes, jaguar-preserve hikes, waterfall swims and ziplining at Bocawina, Garifuna drumming and cultural tours, and sunset on the Sittee River. Come June, the village celebrates its annual Mango Festival — fresh mangoes, local food, music and village life at its sweetest; ask early and we'll plan your stay around it.

My Wedding Story

In 2013, I joined the Weddings, Events & Reservations department at Roberts Grove Beach Resort in Placencia, Belize.

I handled every inquiry personally — by email and phone — and coordinated weddings of every size, from intimate ceremonies for two to celebrations of 100 guests, both at the resort and at private locations off-site. Marriage licenses, officiants, photographers, cakes, receptions, beach setups: every detail went through me.

Beyond weddings, I coordinated birthday parties, group celebrations, conferences, and corporate meetings, on and off the property.

Whether your celebration belongs on Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, in Placencia, Hopkins or another stretch of Belizean sand, tell Roberto the occasion, the date and the size of your party, and he will shape the celebration around you — the setting, the tables, the cake, the food and the flow of the day — so all you have to do is arrive and enjoy it.
